Local Mom of Two Special Needs Children Seeks Votes to Win Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

Kelly Butler is a mommy to two amazing children. Her son, Boston, is two and has Down Syndrome and her daughter Brooklyn is six and has a neurological/movement disorder called Rett Syndrome. Brooklyn had a ?typical? birth, and for the first 15 months of her life everything seemed fine. Slowly, Rett Syndrome took over her body. She lost the ability to walk & talk, stand, and even crawl. Kelly watched as her daughter also lost all ?functional? hand use. Her precious daughter went from a perfect, healthy little girl ready to take on the world, to being totally dependent upon others for her care 24 hours a day. As Brooklyn grows, it is increasingly more difficult to get her in and out of the car. Lifting Brooklyn and then her wheelchair in and out of the back of her 1999 CRV is back-breaking. Kelly also works from home for a non-profit organization as the Family Support Coordinator, which has allowed her to not only help her daughter overcome her mobility challenges, but also work with hundreds of Rett parents world wide, giving them the encouragement and strength to help their own children OVERCOME their disability. Having the ability to transport Brooklyn safely, as well as the rest of her family, is key to keeping Brooklyn involved in school as well as other activities that she loves. In April, the Butler?s story was entered into a Local Hero contest that is being sponsored by NMEDA (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) and part of National Mobility Awareness Month. The grand prize is one of three Wheelchair Accessible Vans that will be awarded during the month of May based on the number of votes received from friends, family and the public.
